So, some time ago, a Finnish study strongly indicated that autism had a genetic rather than environmental basis. Specifically, a certain region on Chromosome 3 being responsible.

That study has now been replicated, and the Chromosome 3 link has been effectively established.

University of Utah medical researchers have confirmed that a region on a single chromosome probably harbors a gene that causes autism.

Here's an interesting bit of information that debunks the "autism is on the rise" myth as well:

In fact, there has been no noticible rise in autism, merely a dramatic change in diagnosis and classification.

That, combined with a number of other studies, effectively explodes the mercury/vaccination autism link so beloved of the tin-foil-hat and anti-intellectual/anti-science crowds.
