A Minion of the Great Satan
Feb. 12th, 2008 08:03 pmWell, looks like it's official. Going back to work at Microsoft. It's another "a-dash" contract gig, but a guaranteed year, with a good possibility of it going blue-badge somewhere along the line. And I'm going in through Excell, not Volt. Volt sucks.
And it's a job I haven't done before, with a lot of opportunity to learn new and useful skills; in fact, learning new stuff is pretty much what the job is about. In fact, they weren't really interested in my technical skillset, or the fact I completely lack one of the necessary skills (SQL server). They were more interested in my people and troubleshooting skills, learning ability, and if I would be interested in a position where things would be changing rapidly and frequently.
I was actually up for two contract positions at Microsoft. This one wasn't my first choice, being more application and support oriented than technically oriented; but the one I was really interested in is still up in the air whether it will exist at all; and this was a pretty decent second choice. There are definitely things about it that interest me, and I could end up a lead or better if the position goes permanent.
And at this point I'm happy to be employed at all, let alone at such a potentially interesting job. It'll be a bit of a pay cut after Amazon, but not painfully so, and still has full benefits.
The commute will be a bitch, but I think I can survive that. I've had worse commutes. :)
