No More Rockstar
Jun. 12th, 2009 01:01 pmI know practically no one reads this, but I figured I'd post anyway.
I'm not an energy-drink junkie, but
deadrose is, and her favorite has been Rockstar. Not any more, though. It appears that Rockstar is owned and run by the son and wife of frothing right-wing nutter Michael Savage. Now, I'm obviously not a usual for this sort of boycott; since the management of nearly every company that exists consists of people who support causes that violate my personal philosophies and ethics to some degree. It's simply unavoidable. But this asshole has also denied the existence of Autism, and said that autistic children are just "brats" who need to be put in their place. That is unignorable, and something I will wholeheartedly support a boycott for. I'm Asperger's myself, as are a large number of my friends and aquaintances. Even were that not the case, I would still support a boycott against such a foul and mean-spirited person.

As part of AlterNet's 10 Hottest Campaigns section, we published a piece alerting readers to a boycott against the Rockstar products. The campaign, launched by Charles C.C. Tsai on Facebook, brought attention to the connection between Savage and the energy drink company. Tsai's page pointed out that Savage's son, Russell Weiner, is the founder and CEO of Rockstar. Savage's wife serves as director of energy drink company, and Savage Productions shares an address with Rockstar(!).

I realize that most of my friends list leans toward the left, and don't need much prompting to boycott anything associated with right-wing jackasses like Michaal Savage. But for those who, like myself, want evidence to support all claims, I've also included reports on Michael Savage's attitude toward autistic children in mainstream news sources.
Chicago Tribune "Michael Savage, autism comment"
Excerpt:
Savage made the remarks last week during a broadcast of his radio show, sparking a firestorm among autism groups. The host said autism is the "illness du jour" and children do not have a father around to tell them to stop acting like a "putz."
"You know what autism is? I'll tell you what autism is," according to a copy of the broadcast captured on mediamatters.org. "In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is."
Spokespeople for Savage, WOR and Talk Radio Network, which syndicates the show, could not be reached for comment yesterday.
Even right-wing Fox news has reported on it:
Fox News "Protesters Decry Radio Commentator Michael Savage's Remarks About Autism"
Excerpt:
Savage offered no apology in a message posted Monday on his Web site. He said greedy doctors and drug companies were creating a "national panic" by overdiagnosing autism, a mental disorder that inhibits a person's ability to communicate.
On his radio show last week, he said: "What do you mean they scream and they're silent? They don't have a father around to tell them, 'Don't act like a moron. You'll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don't sit there crying and screaming, you idiot.'"
The truly ironic part is that, not only is this full of the usual "beatings solve everything" and conspiracy theory bullshit; but he seems to be unaware that there is no medical treatment for autism. The only treatment available is training in coping skills and social interaction. So his mythical "drug company" conspirators get nothing whatsoever out of an "overdiagnosis". Nothing. The guy is simply an idiot with a big mouth.
