Obscure movies.
Jul. 6th, 2005 11:37 pmOkay, I'm going to start one of these things.
Post, in your own Livejournal blog, one or more obscure movies you think everyone else should see. These should be movies that you've seen, but that most people of your aquaintance are not likely to have seen (to your knowledge). Then, go out and watch the movies other people post.
I have three:
Enlightenment Guaranteed
A quirky German indie comedy about two brothers, one a yuppie interior designer whose wife just left, the other a nervous feng-shui consultant trying to achive serenity in his own life, who both travel to Japan and end up in a Zen monastary. One of the funniest movies I've ever seen, though some of the humour is cultural. It's filmed in a "home movie" style, using high-definition video and, sometimes, hand-held cameras. It's a bit slow getting started, but there's a clear turning point early on, and once they get to Japan, it really picks up. Probably fairly difficult to find in rental, though Scarecrow should have it; and it's available on Amazon.
Static
A twisted black comedy about a strange young man, Ernie Blick, who builds an even stranger machine; which he claims "will make people happy, and not sad". The director is strongly influenced by David Lynch, and several characters would be right at home in a Lynch movie. Particularly Ernie's revivalist/survivalist cousin Frank. Long out of print, this one may be very difficult to find.
Circle of Iron aka The Silent Flute
The movie that Bruce Lee was writing, and hoped to make; but died before he could realize his vision. It's not as much a martial arts movie, though there is plenty of fighting; as it is a philosophical journey. It was intended to be an illustration of the Zen Buddhism that formed the basis of Lee's beliefs and the philosophy behind his martial arts. A sort of Zen parable. The acting isn't spectacular, and the lead is a little annoying at times; but overall it's a good movie.
