Drinking quiz
Aug. 9th, 2006 09:33 am1. a. What is your favorite beer?
I don't have a single favorite, it dependes on my mood. In the summer, I like light Witbiers (Caracole Troublette is my favorite, but Hoegaarden is much easier to find); as well as bitter, hoppy, resinous India Pale Ales (LaConner IPA). Winter I prefer heavy, malty, sweet Belgian ales (Gouden Carolous Grand Cru of the Emperor, Allagash Quadruppel, Urthel Samaranth, Chimay Grand Reserve). And any time of the year is good for a rich sweet or sharp bitter stout (Elysian Dragonstooth Stout, Dogfish Head's World Wide Stout, Mackeson's XXX Stout, Pike Place Brewery's XXXXX Stout); a crisp, tart Flemish Sour ale (Duchesse du Bourgogne); or a fruity Lambic (Boon Oude Gueze). And there are a number of odd little specialty beers I seek out, depending on season and mood (Dogfish Head Midas Touch, Fantome Pissenlit).
b. Favorite mixed drink?
Depends on season and mood, either gin'n'tonic (gyn-antanic, j'n'onyx, or any of a number of other drinks on a similar phonetic theme*); a good blended margarita, or a fruity sweet glowworm (midori sour with mandarin absolut).
c. Favorite hard alcohol?
I don't do shooters, so it's usually something to sip. A good single-malt Scotch Whisky, preferably an Islay or similar, though I do like some Highlands as well (Laphraoig, Lagavulin, Talisker, Glendronach). Vodka is nice on occasion (Ultimat if I can afford it, Luksosowa if I can't). Absinthe is always good, if it's good absinthe (Montmartre, Bugnon Clandestine, Jade Blanchette).
d. Favorite wine or other alcoholic beverage?
Not that familiar with most wines. I like a good ruby Port (Dow Qinto do Bomfim '95, or just a good Dow Vintage); and am very fond of a nice botrytis Riesling (don't know any at the moment). Hoodsport Rhubarb wine is a particular favorite, as is Kastelanski mead.
I am also fond of Sake, and my current favorites are Moon on the Water, a junmai gingjo style; and Yaegaki Nigori, a nigori style.
